In Burkina Faso, solar lamps to help students learn
28 May 2022

At UNESCO's initiative, 16 May was proclaimed the International Year of Cultural Heritage. International Day of Light. While around 90 % of the world's population now has access to electricity (according to United Nations data), Africa remains the continent with the lowest electrification rate. In Burkina Faso, only 19% of the population benefits from this service. However, lack of access to electricity is a major obstacle to economic and social development, and also affects teaching and learning conditions.

The EECREQ project (Enlightened school, resource centre for quality education) supported by Aide et Action, aims to improve access to quality education in 120 schools in Burkina Faso and Benin. In addition to the electrification of schools, solar lamps are supplied to pupils to enable them to do their homework at home after sunset. These facilities also encourage group work among pupils, boosting their motivation and their spirit of solidarity.
