Access and quality of education
Education is a fundamental human right, of which millions of people, in particular 250 million children and adolescents, the majority of whom are girls, are currently deprived. Without education, they are deprived of all social, health and economic progress. Investing in education is therefore key to building a fairer, more egalitarian world with greater solidarity.
Action Education is working on the ground to ensure that everyone, whatever their age, has access to quality education, mainly for the most vulnerable and marginalised populations.
1 in 10 children excluded from education
In 2024, more than 250 million children and young people in the world will be out of school, including more than 122 million girls, and 200 million young people aged 15 to 24 will be unemployed and untrained.
For those who do go to school, the education provided is such that it does not enable them to acquire basic skills. The learning crisis that has been raging for more than a decade has been greatly exacerbated by the closure of schools as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is now estimated that 7 out of 10 children living in low- and middle-income countries are unable to read and understand a simple text. (The state of learning, World Bank, 2022)
In addition to overcrowded classrooms, a lack of teaching materials, the absence of pre-school education and rising household poverty, all of which encourage early school leaving, there is an almost worldwide shortage of trained and qualified teachers. According to UNESCO, 44 million teachers are needed to guarantee every child access to primary and secondary education by 2030.
The education figures worldwide reveal the urgency of the situation. It is more necessary than ever for governments to guarantee quality education for allon an equal footing.
Quality education, immediate benefits
Guaranteeing free, public, inclusive, quality education is essential if everyone is to acquire the fundamental skills needed to find a job, be able to look after themselves and feed themselves, know their rights and be able to defend them.
Access to quality, public and inclusive education enables :
- ensure that everyone has the skills they need for everyday life, for professional success and for personal fulfilment
- receive the necessary support from trained and qualified professionals
- know your rights and be able to defend them
Access and quality of education in a few figures
The effectiveness of the right to education has important repercussions at both individual and global level.
- A child under the age of 5 is twice as likely to survive if his or her mother knows reading and writing (1)
- If all children in low-income countries could read, poverty would fall by 12% (2) ;
- An extra year of school can increase men's income by at least 10% and women's income by at least 20% (3)
- Equal access to education between girls and boys reduces the risk of violent conflict by 37% (4)
Education is therefore the most powerful weapon to significantly improve health, stimulate economic growth and encourage the development of sustainable societies. more resilient and sustainable.

Our ambitions
Educating future citizens
In several of the countries where we operate, we are setting up school governments in primary schools. This initiative is fully in line with the right to participation enshrined in the CRC.
A group of pupils, democratically elected by the others, divides up the various aspects of school life by "department": environment, cleanliness, school grounds, canteen, etc.
This encourages children to take part in issues that concern them directly, and gives them a sense of responsibility. It fosters a sense of social awareness and civic responsibility, and gives them the opportunity to work on their command of language, both oral and written, and their ability to make themselves heard and express their ideas.
Protecting children's health
Action Education believes it is necessary to ensure the well-being and respect for the rights of all children in order to guarantee their access to quality education.
One of our priorities is therefore to provide children with a healthy environment. This means installing gender-specific latrines so that young girls can go to the toilet and avoid harassment. As well as giving importance to nutrition, it is necessary to ensure that children are neither deprived nor malnourished. Poor sanitary conditions have a considerable impact on children's education. Repeated illness leads to absenteeism and discourages parents from sending their children to school.
We also attach particular importance to the nutrition of the children we support.
Combating child labour
Children are also exposed to the dangers of trafficking and forced labour. In the world today, 160 million children are still forced to work, half of them in dangerous jobs.
Our priority is to ensure that no child is at risk of abuse, neglect or exploitation such as early marriage, rape, prostitution, child labour, abandonment, trafficking or drug abuse.
To do this, we are raising awareness in communities and developing preventive measures to provide effective support to families so that their children are in school and not at work.
How does Action Education defend and promote the right to education?
For Action Education, education is the key to guaranteeing access for all to development and to a fairer, more egalitarian society. Without quality, inclusive and equitable education, countries will not succeed in reducing poverty. Making the the right to education for all is therefore a matter of absolute urgency.
Convinced of the importance of free, inclusive education, with qualified teachers and appropriate teaching content, Action Education develops projects to give everyone, whatever their age, access to education.
The association's education projects aim to improve school management and the school environment, teacher training and teaching content. Our actions help to increase school attendance, improve pupils' results and performance and reduce the number of school drop-outs.
Help us change the world and give everyone access to quality education.
