Improving education provision for vulnerable children in Benin
Benin's education system is marked by a high drop-out rate at every stage of schooling (six out of ten children enter the cycle, and only two of them complete it). This is due to a lack of infrastructure and qualified teachers, as well as overcrowding. At the same time, the quality of education is in question, with a large number of pupils falling below 'sufficient' thresholds in a number of key subjects such as reading and mathematics. In addition, the skills of teachers are lacking, often due to incomplete or inappropriate training for children living in extreme poverty, and learning conditions, teaching aids, equipment and school supplies are very inadequate.

The aim of the project
To guarantee an improvement in education provision in Benin, particularly for girls and for the most vulnerable children who are most at risk of dropping out of school:
- Improving access to and retention in primary school
- Improve school performance and sustainability in project areas
- Strengthen the synergy between players (civil society organisations, decentralised government departments, local authorities) in the local governance of education.
Our actions
- 154 orphans and vulnerable children cared for, including 94 girls
- 40,000 children receive school supply kits
- 1,970 children have been issued with secure birth certificates
- 4,362 pupils, including 2,089 girls, have access to support classes
- 80 Cercles de Réflexion des Femmes / Associations des Mères Educatrices supported in updating their action plans
- Organisation of 80 community meetings on girls' education
