The ILEAD project aims to train young people in vulnerable situations in order to bridge the gap between employers' demands and the qualifications of uneducated young people.
Youth unemployment is a major problem in Sri Lanka, affecting 23 % of this age group. The regions hardest hit by the ethnic conflict (1983-2009), notably the Northern and Eastern Provinces, have higher levels of poverty, making young people in these areas particularly vulnerable to unemployment. At national level, a mismatch between educational provision and labour market needs exacerbates this situation.

The aim of the project
The project aims to meet the vocational education needs of young people from disadvantaged families, enabling them to integrate socially and economically. By reducing socio-economic inequalities, this promotes social cohesion and reconciliation among a population torn apart during the civil war.
Our actions
The needs of local markets were at the heart of the teaching at the various centres. In order to ensure a good placement rate for students in companies, a market study was carried out beforehand to identify promising occupations. Next, the ILEAD programme was designed to combine training and collaboration with the companies, craftsmen and industries in the centre's vicinity, so that the students would be equipped with the skills sought after by the local economic players. The ILEAD programme consists of a 3-month practical training course and assistance with a work placement.
Key figures
young people trained between 2006 and 2023. More than half of them find a job at the end of their course.
