Laos: improving access to quality education for disadvantaged children in rural areas

Objective

Impact

Partners

This project aims to improve access to quality pre-school and primary education for children from ethnic minorities living in rural areas of Laos.

The difficulty of running schools is a major challenge for schooling in rural communities, particularly in upland and mountain communities. Management at school level needs to be strengthened. A safe and friendly school environment needs to be established in most schools, and water and sanitation are particularly important. Learning difficulties are also linked to poor health and nutrition, particularly in the case of young children.

The aim of the project

Improve school governance and learning for pre-school and primary school children through 2 levers:

  • Strengthening school management and fostering an inclusive, child-centred learning environment
  • Promote school readiness and nutrition programmes in targeted schools
Improving educational outcomes for disadvantaged children living in rural areas of Laos through a better learning environment in pre-school and primary school

Our actions

  • Training teachers in inclusive education, children's fundamental rights, student participation in the classroom and early childhood development.
  • Provide financial support for the schooling of children from particularly poor families (school fees, school equipment, supplies, etc.).
  • Improve access to drinking water and sanitation in targeted schools.
  • Set up a pre-school classroom near the target primary schools.
  • Provide financial support for volunteer pre-school educators, while at the same time making the Ministry of Education responsible for taking over from them, in order to provide an allowance to fund and pay educators.
  • Install hygienic school kitchens in targeted schools.
  • Encourage pupils' mothers to contribute to healthy nutrition by helping to prepare meals at school. Offer children 1 balanced meal a day at school at lunchtime.
  • Plant vegetable gardens in targeted schools
