The aim of this project is to contribute to the management of the educational continuum between pre-school and primary school by state institutions, decentralised services and communities in order to maximise the development and success of children aged 3 to 8.
Pre-primary education is essential to a child's overall development, facilitating the acquisition of key skills for success in primary school (UNICEF, UNESCO). A low pre-school enrolment rate is linked to poor school results: in 2020, only 6 % of Burkina Faso's children were enrolled in pre-school, while 67 % of pupils had not mastered basic skills at primary level.
There are marked inequalities according to living environment: 30 % of urban children aged 3 to 5 attend pre-school compared with 11 % in rural areas. Despite its inclusion in public policies to achieve MDG 4, pre-school education still lacks funding, and its importance is not widely recognised in communities.
